Innovation for the sustainable food systems

The research is clear, the industry agrees - the food system needs to be transformed to be sustainable for both people and the environment. Sweden has great potential to increase its ability to innovate so that the food system contributes to caring for both the environment and human health, while at the same time providing us with food, jobs and quality of life.

This is how we want to contribute to a sustainable food system

Today, a third of households' climate impact comes from food. The diet is also behind the increase in several common public diseases. A more sustainable and healthy food system can help reduce environmental impact and at the same time prevent common diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer and diabetes. To succeed in achieving Swedish and international health and sustainability goals, innovation and cooperation are required at all levels in society.

Vinnova wants to help make visible the system and policy challenges that prevent a transformation of the food system. We work with a mission-oriented approach that is about changing entire systems. It is about breaking silos and letting people who otherwise do not meet discuss problems and solutions. The purpose is for everyone to start working in the same direction with a common objective in focus.

Through dialogues with over 300 people from different sectors in the food system, Vinnova has prioritized four sub-areas with system- potential:

  • The food production of the future
  • The food of the future
  • The trade of the future
  • The public meals of the future
