Innovation projects to mitigate the crisis

New solutions are needed to meet both the acute and the longer-term needs that arise in the wake of the corona crisis. Vinnova is now funding twelve project that will contribute to a quick and sustainable transition through both infection-free public environments, better treatment of covid-19 and new ways to use conference facilities.

"The projects address the needs and opportunities that arise during the crisis and develop solutions that can help prepare Sweden for the recovery and restructuring that will be required," says Erik Borälv, responsible for the Innovation initiative in the wake of the crisis.

The projects can be divided into just over SEK 11 million. The next round or application round closes on 21 August.

Examples of project:

Cooling to help damaged lungs and brain

The aim of the project is to cool patients to reduce the effects of acute respiratory distress syndrome in seriously ill covid-19 patients and to reduce the risk of potential brain damage and high relapse rates. The technology helps reduce the need for long-term hospitalization.

Increased efficiency and flexible use of conference facilities

The pandemic has led to meetings, events and training now taking place via digital platforms. It may also reduce the need for meeting facilities in the future. The project will develop new forms of meeting where new technology and the personal meeting interact and find new uses for conference facilities.

Spray-on, self-sanitizing surfaces

In order for society to function smoothly in the middle of an outbreak of disease like covid-19, the public should be able to feel safe when taking in objects such as handles, handrails and escalators in public environments. The project will investigate the antiviral effectiveness of various agents and test them in public environments.

Have music students and teachers play together again

The delay that exists in today's digital tools for online meetings and education makes it impossible to play together. The project will create a new solution that allows musicians and music students to play together in sync in the distance.

Motorized patient transfer for covid-19 patients

In order to minimize the number of deaths of covid-19 and to limit the number of patients who need to be treated in intensive care units with a respirator, abdominal position reversals and reversals are made to the front side position. The project will develop a customized motorized turnaround product to limit infectious and strain injuries to personnel.

Innovative respiratory protection

The project will develop a respiratory mask that filters both incoming and outgoing air, to be used as protective equipment for healthcare professionals and as a supplement to oxygen machines for more comfortable supply of oxygen to patients, while protecting their surroundings from the exhaled air.
