Important results from the project
It´s concluded that it will be impossible to achieve the objectives and goals set up for the Green Calcination project, hence this is why the project is closed before the goals have been achieved. This is due to the change in engagement of key project partners. However, the primary objective of the project was to contribute to the transition to a fossil-free production of critical raw materials, which is something that Northvolt continuously is working towards.
Expected long term effects
Since the feed material and samples only were treated by conventional heating, it was not possible to conclude how the method of heating impacted the calcined material. The project did not reach the point where the heating element solution where implemented or tested and unfortunately, no results from any pilot scale testing can be shown.
Approach and implementation
Initial material characterization and preliminary calcination tests were done by Metso Outotec to develop a baseline for subsequent testing. LTU conducted sample preparation and characterisation of feed materials aiming to understand the impact from the selected heat supply method during calcination on the properties of the heated material. The electrical heating solution was planned to be implemented and tested as an important step towards a fossil-free industry. However, the project never reached this stage.
